Innovation in History: Impact and Change: The Airplane

Accessibility to Rural Areas

The airplane improved access to rural areas with little or no access by train or other vehicles. After a stable network of air travel had been established, shipping and travel to more areas was easier and faster, allowing people to live where they could not have before. For example, many towns in Alaska, including Juneau, are only accessible by plane or boat, though plane being the faster and sometimes safer option. (Google maps claimed it could not calculate directions to Juneau, AK from Seattle, WA.)

Expanded Availability of Goods

Shipping could also now include virtually any material or product that could fit on a plane. As a result,  planes now assisted trains in the widespread availability of goods.
